Odunde Festival 2011

I've lived in Philly, pretty much my whole life and I've never been to the Odunde Festival. The Festival is the largest and most long-standing African American street festival in the nation. There's vendors where you can buy African sculptures, masks and furniture. There's also jewelry and tubs and tubs of pure Shea Butter ! Of course, there is food and live performers! Ah, it was fun. I went with my cousin Shanisha and her son Amir and my friend Lizzie. We had a pretty good time.

An Evening Out

On sunday, I attended a event at the Waterworks Restaurant in Philadelphia. A charity auction show, there was networking as well a fashion show with designs by Shavonne DeAnn. You may have seen Angela Simmons wearing some of her designs. It was lovely, me and my friends enjoyed ourselves and met some cool people. Great way to start the summer!

All Good Things, Must Come To An End

May 7th, 2011 my undergraduate career came to an end. I graduated, it was bittersweet. I didn't feel anything as the day was approaching, everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong that week. Then all of a sudden it hit me, as I approached the stage to accept my degree holder...I was graduating. If I never believed in anything in life, I believed in me. I did it. Yes, I did. I never knew what it felt like to achieve something, but I felt it then. In the midst of the tears of joy, I was overcome with sadness. I looked back over my 4/5 years of college, the laughs, the tears, the ups and downs...it was really over and a new chapter of my life was beginning, whether I was ready or not. With no job offer or plan, I was released into the "Real World", hoping that it was nothing like the reality show. I, Sheli hunter have a bachelors of science in Fashion Merchandising with minor concentrations in Marketing and Communications Media, yay! Momma I made it! Class of 2011!!!

Book Club

Me and my friend decided to start a book club, we'll buy the same book and after each chapter discuss it, highlight our favorite parts, etc. We went to the bookstore in hopes of getting "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coello, but there was only one copy left so we got "By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept". From the summary it seems like it's about lovers who are separated for about 12 years and when they re-unite it's...I don't want to spoil the story. Anyways, I was reading and came across an inspirational piece and thought I'd share.

"Every day, God gives us the sun--and also one moment in which we have the ability to change anything that makes us unhappy. Every day, we try to pretend that we haven't perceived that moment, that doesn't exist--that today is the same as yesterday and will be the same tomorrow. But if people really pay attention to their everyday lives, they will discover that magic moment. It may arrive in the instant when we are doing something mundane, like putting our front-door key in the lock; it may lie hidden in the quiet that follows the lunch hour or in the thousand and our things that all seem the same to us. It touched me because I don't want to be one of those people who let life pass them by or don't believe in themselves. Always weighing the consequences of a situation but yet, have not dared to try. Let life come to you.

Spring Break in VEGAS!

This may be the longest post ever, well the photo length is hefty that's for sure! It's just you can't sum up Vegas in one post, with a limited amount of pictures or even the fun that I had. This would go on forever. Anyways, I went to Vegas for this year's spring break. The Palms Hotel(which hosts MTV Real World Las Vegas) hosted MTV's Spring Break and the whole experience was ISANE! That was my word for that week. lol The hotel, parties and performances was just spectacular. Pit Bull, Neyo, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalif...and (wait for crowd to go crazy) LUPE FIASCO!!! Performed!! My favorite of course was LU! If you ever seen him perfom live then you know when I say "He is one of the greatest performers EVER", I mean it. I mean, really his stage prescence is ridculous, even if you don't know any of his songs you get drawn in by his energy! This man did a backflip off the drums at one point, then jumped in the pool with everything on to close! I mean, it doesn't get any better than that. You'll just have to see it when it airs March 28th, make sure you look for me a insane-crazy person jumping up and down singing her heart-out as if she's performing. But all in all, Vegas was so much Fun!!! It will an experience for sure, I'd never forget.
Warning, you'll fall in love with the H+M in the photo's, I did. This store is beautiful I forgot to shop!

These Acne Admire boots in both black and olive are on my winter wish list. My birthday is in two days and it'd be a miracle of I can get these!!! $1,200+ for shoes...hmmm, nobody loves me that much except myself. I am determined to get these, I won't eat, or pay rent. Over the weekend, I attended a Fashion Show at my school. Earlier that day, I went to the goodwill and got a few things. I will do a haul post later today, but this is what I wore. I fell in love with the jean-shorts-over tights/stockings look. It's my favorite alternative to going out and having nothing to wear. I especially love this lipstick, it's my obsession....it's just so electric.

First, I'd like to say Happy Thanksgiving! To everyone and I hope you guys enjoyed it and spent it with loved ones. Also take this day to reflect how fortunate you are and remember there is always someone, somewhere who's situation is worst than yours. I have been trying to "break" from everything this week...which is going okay, I've been sleeping all day, then at night I party.. I just want to get back to school and get the semester over with. I am thankful for a handful of things, even through my complaining. I'm blessed and ever-so grateful.

This past Friday, I had an interview with one of Fashion's most influential magazines. I was nervous all week, when I received that email they would like to meet with me to discuss future opportunities, my mind was racing "What should I wear?", or "Should I even go". There's been numerous internship interviews I've gotten at huge places, but because of my self-consciousness and my background I don't show up to the interview or even return emails. I think way too much about things, that aren't relevant but seem so real to me. Movies and reality T.v make 'Fashion Interning' seem so glamorous, they interns all look the same way, cute little white girls with a bomb ass wardrobes and makes you wonder why the hell are the even interning, this must be a hobby for them.

However, this time I decided not to let anything hold me back. Without a care in the world, I went. I came home for break early on Thursday to get everything ready for Friday. I was going back and forth about going all night, it seemed unreal. It didn't hit me that I actually had a interview until I got off the bus in New York and during that 30 minute, 20+block walk from 7th ave & 28th street to 57th & 8th I did a lot of thinking about what I would say, how would I act even the facial gestures I would make. I was thinking it would be a scene from "The Devil Wears Prada". you know Andy's first day. Surprisingly, it was slightly different. I arrived at the Hearst Companies building and was directed to the security desk, where I told the gentleman that I had a
interview.

He asked: What time? I said: 2:15. It was 1:45pm. He said: Oh, your incredibly early. I suggest you come back at 2:05.

I left, ran across the street to Mcdonalds to touch up my makeup and replace these god-awful loafers, with some very reserved black suede heels from H+M. The restroom was crowded so I unzipped my black leather bag and touched up my makeup, changed my shoes all while women were washing their hands. No one felt this was strange, I did. I called my friend Trish for a little pep-talk, who reminded me that my nails weren't did so to keep my hands to my side or out of view at all times. It was 2:05 so I hurried off the phone and went back to the security desk. He complimented me on being on time. I got my pass then headed up the escalator.

I was in awe, there was a women who called an elevator for me. There were about 10 different elevator cars that all lead to different magazines...I'm sure one of them was Teen Vogue, I'm guessing. When I arrived, I snapped a quick picture of the glass double doors (hence, the first photo). I walked in, the women who've I have been communicating with via email greeted me and we had casual conversation. I waited to be interviewed, which was only moments later. When the guy showed up, he was relatively young and was dressed casually. He gave me some background information on him and the company, and asked if I had any questions. He also said how he loved my pants, which were my ASOS floral silk pants, and my hair. He said I reminded him of Solange Knowles. I don't know if he was just being nice, trying to make conversation anyway, I thanked him. The interview lasted all but 30 minutes and the entire time I was sneaking a peak into the fashion closet, which was AMAZING!!!! He showed me some inspirational look boards that the interns created and told to me to make sure I bring flats because the interns take the subway a lot on errands to pick up samples. We shook hands wished each other a good afternoon.

I felt relieved and as I walked back to the bus stop, I was glowing. I had gone on my first real interview and it went great! All I did was be myself and got over what was stopping me so many times before.

Beauty Bit: EOS Evolution of Smooth Lip Balm

Last night around mid night I headed to Wal-Mart to do some Grocery shopping (which is my favorite time to go because it's totally empty) and I ran across the popular EOS lip balms. I've read about these in multiple magazines and watched You Tube Beauty Guru after Guru praise this Lip Balm. So I had to try it out for myself.

My Review

1. The Smell of these are amazing!

2. The Shape and the Packaging are adorable.

3. These balms Glide on extremely smooth and they also have SPF15 in them which is great to protect your lips from the sun and also keep them fully replenished.

4. These cost me $2.97 a piece. A little on the expensive side for Lip Balm, but these are worth it and I'm sure they'll last longer than any other lip Balm I've used.

A Grungy Saturday

Saturday I took some pictures for an "Outfit of the Day" post. This look is an grunge inspired look. The sweater, which I accidentally destroyed on purpose because I saw a Alexander Wang sweater in grey and it had holes in it....I wanted it so bad, but it was too much for my life at the time. So, instead I thrifted this sweater to resembled it. I've gotten some good and bad compliments on it. I love it, it's my favorite item in my closet. I paired with a grey sweater underneath, cut-off jean shorts and lace fishnet thigh highs and to top it off trucker boots, which are actually from Walmart! It's kinda edgy, but the lace thigh highs give it a feminine look to it. As for makeup, I went natural with a dark smoky-eye, I call them my Jenny from Gossip Girl eyes! lol With a berry-lip, "Wine Not" by Revlon. I hope you guys enjoy these....there's more to come!

Since I downloaded this, I could not stop listening to it. Not to long ago, I wasn't a Rhianna fan, after the whole Chris Brown situation. I felt like she was trying to play the victim...talking about the incident right around the time when CB's album was coming out. I was totally off Rhi-Rhi for awhile. Anyways,she's always had effortless style or should we just say that Mariel Hann is just a Style Genius!!! I always thought Rhianna wasn't musically disabled for some reason, I mean she looks good so why not endorse her and make a star. However, LOUD has a collection of songs that make you re-think that whole sentence. Well, atleast for me. I tweeted last night after listening to it that it takes me on Acid-trip, I don't mean "drugs" but rather a musical journey...you may find yourself in a dance-coma. I danced the entire night away, while doing homework. She has special guests such as Drake, Nicki Minaj and Eminem on the slbum, but I think she could have done without them. It's still really great seeing her get back to her oldself. So far, my favorite tracks are Only Girl in the World, California King Bed and Complicated.

I really haven't been posting lately, I used to update my blog almost everyday....I just don't know where the time goes, one day I look up and it's Monday then the next it's Friday night! Time Flies. Anyways, school has been a major part of why I don't usually post. It seems the closer you get to the end, the more things try to distract you from making it. NOT ME, it took me 5 years to get my undergrad...I'm not ashamed of being a "Super Senior", so what! One of my professors said

"Finishing College in 4 years, is like going to a party and leaving at 11 pm".

I couldn't have said it better, I mean there are people who do...leave the party early, but us "cool" kids stay awhile longer. lol No, but really...I don't think that I'm ready to graduate and face the Real World quite yet, I want to stay at the party and dance my life away! Maybe I'm scared because I'm not sure what the future holds...I still have some months to get ready, until then I'm going to enjoy this ride.

This last year is getting really hectic, I mean....but I can handle it, I always do.

I bought a new camera, a Nikon d60...I like taking pictures, really good ones and I'm trying to learn teach myself photography and parts of a camera. Since, I want to be a stylist, I feel that it's important to know the dynamics of a camera..what's it like to be the photographer, lighting and angle are good to know when executing a vision. These are just some shots me and my friend Adrienne played around with since we know NOTHING about a professional camera! lol These came out pretty good and I enjoy shooting my looks. I'm camera shy, can you tell? Oh, the blue electric lipstick, I actually MADE myself! I was getting compliments all weekend (pics coming soon). ...I made drop a lip line.

Blue lipstick seems to the lip colour for the Fall and Winter, which I am totally for. It's been coming to the surface very slowly, we've seen celebs such as Ke$ha and Amber Rose wearing it and of course on the runway! I couldn't get past the look of it....it reminded me of eating a blue popscicle, lol. My friend Sophanit wore it fabulously this weekend at the Babylon Cartel Fall Release Party and looked Hawt! I just may wear it give it a try next weekend at Pittsburgh Fashion Week! We shall see!

I probably will never be able to get over not seeing Karl Lagerfeld's platinum ponytail bobbing through Chanel in Soho, or Kanye acting like a Asshole through the streets maybe even seeing Janelle Monae in Ralph Lauren....but there's always next year. But what from what I've read and heard, this was the best FNO yet!

I post alot about Solo, but she's my current style crush. Most of my outfit inspiration choices come from her as well as myself. I think it's ok, to have an Style Icon that you get inspiration from, you love their effortless style...and she's IT (for me).

I've always been a fan of her since she was Beyonce's back-up dancer. I applaud her for finding her own way and not just using her sister's fame to get somewhere. After she "de-commercialized" herself, as I call it. lol Lost the weave, the pounds of makeup and Dereon dresses, I became a Stan!

I haven't updated in awhile...mainly because every time school starts I fall into a "rut". It's funny cause I anticipate going back all summer than something always happens. Sometimes I forget that it's something that going to benefit me, despite the papers, studying and tests. Anyways, I want to wish all my fellow bloggers & students a great semester!

Summer is officially over and I'm ecstatic! Fall is one of my favorite seasons. Warm colors and it's when I purchase my staple wardrobe pieces. I haven't bought any yet, I'd really love to have a Military jacket.....hmmmm.

The new hair is still growing on me, but I manage to incorporate it quite nice. I was at a sweet 16 in this picture actually, but got bored lol. Anyways the jacket I purchased from H&M earlier that day which I am in LOVE with!!!! Isn't it cute...you can dress it down or up, even up-down as I did. lol The belt was from there also and I the shorts were a last minute wardrobe malfunction...I cut my dad shorts. The shoes weren't shown but they were Dolce Vita booties with gold chains on them. I'm really not into jewelry and excessive accessories...I'm a minimalist.

I love this outfit, not only is it irresistibly cute but it's comfortable and simple. I actually made that top in 5mins, the pattern on the fabric is really interesting minus it not being on grain. I did the Big Chop! As natural hair experts would say, I cut off all the chemically damaged hair (from perming, weaves. dyes, etc) and I've been wanting to cut my hair for a while....I just wanted something different. I'm still getting used to it, but I love it. I can't wait until it grows. I was worried that I wouldn't look right with it, some of my guy friends said that I'd lose "sex appeal", all because my hair would be short and blahhh! I'm rocking this sh*t! My ultimate goal is for it to grow big and beautiful curls! I'm also working on a new look and projects for my blog. I want it to be more than just another "Blog" or "Fashion Blog". Stay tuned.

I just saw this and died. Military inspired by the 20th century Military is brilliant. Double-breasted coats with naval accents. I really love this look because, I love the 20th century era! Everything from fashion to culture was really just starting, it was the age of scientific inventions, politics, romance and ideaology.But anways, the collection reminds me of the factory boys, who would work in the factory's...in a fashionisto sort of way though.
